NVIDIA announced today that it is throwing its weight behind Miracast, a display standard that allows streaming of video and audio from mobile devices to HDTV’s. Miracast, a standard promoted by the Wi-Fi Alliance, enables high-quality streaming through wireless connections, and that’s exactly the kind of feature NVIDIA wants to leverage Tegra 3′s media and gaming capabilities.
“At the heart of every Tegra chip is a high-performance CPU and GPU, which means you can use Tegra to play amazing games on the big screen,” said Mike Han, NVIDIA senior product marketing manager. “We’re not just talking about flinging Angry Birds but racing a super-charged jet ski in the game Riptide THD and playing heart-pounding first-person shooter games like Shadowgun THD.”
And that’s where things get interesting. Tegra 3 is know primarily as one of the leaders in mobile gaming and supporting powerful phones and tablets. But because there’s also easy connectivity for game controllers, your tablet could effectively be your console. We’ve seen how popular Ouya became thanks to its low-cost and promise of quality gaming, but Miracast would enable comparative hardware being able to wirelessly connect to a television and perform other functions on a device you might already own.
The trouble will be having a television that supports Miracast. As we noted when covering MHL and MirrorLink for cars, standards are not universally standard. The way one company implements a feature is not the way another will do it, so manufacturers have competing products with different agendas and capabilities. The Wi-Fi Alliance has yet to finalize the spec to make Miracast standard and deployable across devices, so not all HDTV displays will be compatible.
NVIDIA joins Texas Instruments as chipmakers who have declared support for Miracast, which bodes well for the chances of a standard that’s actually standard. NVIDIA has also released a white paper in conjunction with the announcement that provides a few more details about how Tegra 3 could benefit from Miracast.
