AT&T will add another phone to its Android 4.0 device portfolio when the LG Nitro HD is upgraded starting next Tuesday. The company promises that beginning July 31, customers should start seeing prompts to update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the firmware version that launched prior to the Nitro HD’s release on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The ICS update will graduate the Nitro HD to a newer firmware version capable of accessing more apps that were previously unavailable. It will also introduce a reformed Optimus 3.0 UI that uses LG’s customization of Android built onto Ice Cream Sandwich.

Nitro HD owners can visit http://www.lg.com/us/NitroHD-Upgrade beginning next Tuesday to install the new update by following the accompanying instructions. A WindowsPC will be required to use the upgrade tool.

Here’s a list of what kind of features LG Nitro users can expect in the newer version.

  • New lock screen actions let you conveniently jump directly to a specific application without unlocking the homescreen.
  • The redesigned Gallery App & Photo Editor makes it easier to manage, show, and share photos and videos than ever before.
  • An updatedhome screen folder and favorites tray that lets you group your apps and shortcuts logically by simply dragging one onto another.
  • Enhanced multitasking capabilities let you instantly navigate from one task to another by leveraging a list in the System Bar that includes thumbnail images of all recently used apps.  Just tap the thumbnail to resume using that app.
  • Improved text input with an updated keyboard that supports faster text input and more accurate entries with better error correction and word suggestions.
  • An app that helps you easily monitor yourdata usage.
  • Face Unlock, a new screen-lock option that intelligently unlocks your device using facial recognition software.
