Every time I write about a new phone getting the Android 4.0 update, people ask when the Samsung Galaxy S II will get the same privilege as its high-end friends and family. For T-Mobile USA customers, that answer is in the next 10 days.

T-Mobile USA confirmed via Twitter that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware upgrade will become available on June 11, 2012. Unless Sprint or AT&T come in at the last minute to steal its thunder, T-Mobile will be the first U.S. carrier to offer an official Android 4.0 update to the Galaxy S II. For a company that’s been seen as slacking in updates, this is an important thing to note.

On the downside, the Android 4.0 software rollout will not be an over the air update, which tends to be more convenient for customers. Instead, T-Mobile will deliver the update through the Samsung Kies desktop program. Yes, that’s the same buggy program that often doesn’t work and fails to recognize phones, but let’s hope this will finally be the time that Samsung gets its house in order. If you experience difficulty obtaining an update through Kies, visit a T-Mobile store and have one of the employees do the update for you.

T-Mobile USA promises more details soon. That’s nice, but many people will be too busy saying, “Oh my goodness, it’s finally coming!” to care much about anything else the company has to say. Nice to see it’s making some headway in getting Ice Cream Sandwich onto more devices.
