According to Anil Doradla, an analyst at William Blair, the iPhone 4S did not claim the top selling smartphone at Verizon Wireless this past quarter. Instead, the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX edged the iPhone 4S, but the iPhone 4S did remain the top selling smartphone at AT&T and Sprint. There are a couple of interesting reasons as to why this Motorola device and not even the Galaxy Nexus outsold the iPhone 4S.
First, Verizon had an enticing double the data promotion for much of the quarter, which only applied to 4G LTE Android smartphones. The DROID RAZR MAXX is one of the best 4G LTE devices currently offered and with battery life being a big concern for many shoppers, the RAZR MAXX was an obvious choice. Moreover, the DROID RAZR MAXX is 4G LTE while the iPhone 4S continues to operate on Verizon’s 3G network. Consumers want speed and efficiency in terms of processing power and web browsing.
Doradla believes it is too early for the upcoming iPhone launch to impact sales of the iPhone 4S today, but should become a factor in the next month or so. It will be interesting to see which Verizon smartphone takes the crown next quarter when the Samsung Galaxy S III becomes a factor.
