The first viable Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, will have an updated successor that runs the latest viable tablet software. Samsung announced today that it will begin selling the Galaxy Tab 2 this March, starting in the United Kingdom with more markets to follow.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is a slimmer, rounder, and overall nicer version of the original GTab. It has a 7-inch PLS TFT touchscreen with a WSVGA resolution (1024×600). The device also has a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 3 megapixel fixed focus camera on the back, and a VGA front-facing camera for video calls. There’s also Wifi and HSPA+ 21 Mbps built-in for web connectivity.

The biggest selling point of the Galaxy Tab 2 is that it runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). None of Samsung’s other tablets have ICS, instead relying on the heavily-customized version of Android 3.x (Honeycomb) to power its software. The Tab 2.0 having the latest software means it will have access to a few more apps, new features unique to Ice Cream Sandwich, and and optimized experience not yet present on other devices.

How this stacks up in a world of quad-core processors likely to invade Mobile World Congress in a couple of weeks is unclear, but we’ll know this March when the Galaxy Tab 2 goes on sale. In the meantime, here are the Galaxy Tab 2 specs.
