Huawei Ascend D Quad is “the world’s fastest phone” announced at MWC

Huawei is not a household name in the western world, but the Chinese smartphone maker is out to change that in 2012. Today, the company announced the Huawei Ascend and boldly claimed that it is “the world’s fastest phone.”

Actually, make that phones because Huawei is releasing a series of devices targeted at different market sectors. The Ascend Diamond series has varying specs – sort of like the difference between a Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx – so let’s take a look at the Ascend Quad, which Huawei touts as the leader of the pack.

The Ascend has a quad-core processor developed in-house. The K3V2 quad-core processor runs at 1.2 to 1.5 GHz with a 16-core GPU. Huawei claims that its processor offers up more speed with 30 percent fewer battery consumption than rivals. The Ascend also has the benefit of what appears to be a stock version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. As for the specs, the Ascend Quad has

  • A 4.5-inch screen with 330 ppi, which translates to a large screen with excellent quality
  • 8 MP rear camera
  • 1,800 mAh battery (2,500 on the Quad XL)
  • 8.9 mm thickness, 64 mm height
  • LTE support
  • White or black color options
  • Huawei claims that the Ascend is superior to both the Galaxy Nexus and iPhone thanks to Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and Audience earSmart voice technology for better sound quality.

The Ascend will release globally at different times and prices, none of which have been disclosed yet. Huawei had a noticeable presence at CES but was clear that the devices it introduced were just the beginning of a big effort to become more widely-known. The Ascend looks to be an excellent way to get on more people’s radar. The Ascend D quad will be in Australia, Asia-Pacific, China, Europe, Middle East, and North and South America in Q2 2012. The Ascend D1 will be available by April 2012.

Here’s Huawei’s explanation on the differences between each model.

As part of the Ascend D series, Huawei also introduced the Ascend D quad XL and the Ascend D1 smartphones. The Ascend D quad XL comes with a 2500mAh battery which provides two to three days of normal usage. With the same specifications as the Ascend D quad, the Ascend D quad XL measures 10.9 mm slim. The Ascend D1 runs on a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and has a 1670mAh battery.
