Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, everyone. I’m sure you’re busy unwrapping your new toys or spending time with family, but I wanted to check in one last time with a few Android app and game recommendations. Each week, Androinica.com highlights noteworthy apps and recaps what’s new and interesting in the Android Market. This week, we’re shortening some of the reviews in order to throw in a couple more apps. Hope you enjoy.

Clash of the Nexus Ninjas

Android 2.0.1 or higher required

Clash of the Nexus Ninjas is the mobile version of the Nexus ninja unboxing game that appeared earlier this week. The game is a classic 8-bit beat em up that lacks complexity or great difficulty, but it’s still kind of fun. My opinion of the game is likely clouded by the nostalgia factor, but you’ll probably have a similar affinity for the game as well. Controls are Nintendo-era simple, and all it takes is some coordinated taps to beat each level. The longevity and replay of the game might not be too high, but we’ll cross that bridge when you stealthily sneak up to it and throw ninjas off it.

Frontline Commando

Android 2.1+ required

Frontline Commando is one of the latest Glu Mobile games that combines shooting, action, the freemium model (the game itself is free, but upgrades cost money). Players take on the role of a one man army facing waves of enemies on different missions. The shootouts sometimes occur close enough to use a shotgun or assault rifle, or far enough to use a sniper rifle with scope. Regardless of the distance, the odds are against you, so you’ll need to get weapon and protection upgrades from the store. As we’ve complained about in the past, there’s no realistic way to earn those upgrades in any reasonable amount of time, so you pretty much have to buy the upgrades unless you’re willing to suffer a lot of defeats or complete offers to earn free credits. FLCommando is an otherwise solid game that can provide a good balance of difficulty and fun. Controls for targeting, shooting, reloading, and monitoring threats. There are many missions and survival games to complete, so give it a try if your phone is compatible.

Girls of Geek

Android 1.6+ required
$0.99 (sale price)

Girls of Geek is an annual calendar featuring cute women with geek cred that’s “focused on beautiful geeky women” posing seductively with the gadgets, video games, movies, TV show, and comic items that they love. The calendar is on sale at Girlsofgeek.com, but you can also grab the app to get a collection of wallpapers from the calendar photoshoot. The official app is temporarily on sale for only $0.99 USD until midnight tonight (December 25, 2011). Grab it now to get wallpapers featuring Hailey Bright, Lisa Foiles, Sassi Bob, and more. (Note: Images aren’t hi-res, so you they may not look the best on a Galaxy Nexus or tablet.)

Momondo

Android 2.0+ required

Momondo is one of the best looking and most expansive considering that it aggregates more than 700 travel websites and finds the best deals. The slick looking app then backs up its pearly black hues with a deathly simple search feature. Enter in the departure and arrival locations, choose a date, and wait for the results to pour in. From there, users can filter according to time of day, search nearby airports for better deals, change scheduled stops, and filter which airlines appear in results. The app doesn’t support Momondo hotels or car rental searches, but it’s pretty nifty if you need to book a flight.

Red Bull TV

Android 2.1+ required

Red Bull TV is one of the many official apps by energy drink maker Red Bull. This particular app focuses on video from the extreme sports and lifestyle to which RedBull often advertises. RBTV broadcasts live footage from motocross, skateboarding, snowboarding, and other sports. Videos are organized according to popularity, rating, freshness, and sport. Red Bull TV also features exclusive video with the stars of those sports, behind-the-scenes clips and interviews, and special footage from the Red Bull Music Academy series, Soundclash concerts, and B-boy competitions.

Timmy Me

Android 2.1+ required

Timmy Me is just the type of app to grab when you find your self in Canada or select U.S. markets and want to track down a Tim Hortons. Timmy Me uses GPS to track down the 10 Tim Hortons nearest to a user’s locations. The app then provides nutritional facts on menu items and includes a notepad that helps users make sure they get the right coffee when placing orders for multiple people. And if you pay with Tim Card, Timmy Me can monitor the balance on up to 5 different cards.

WordPress for Android

Android 2.1+ required

WordPress powers a huge number of blogs, and if you’ve thought of starting one, the Android app may influence which platform you choose. The latest version of the app makes a major change to the way it looks and performs. The Dashboard provides quick access to all functions, including the ability to add and edit posts, administer comments, and look at stats from your blog. The post editor has been changed to take up more screen space, especially noticeable on the new tablet-optimized formatting. The app does a wonderful job integrating with Android, so grab it if you have a WP-powered blog or are thinking of starting one.
