Rock, paper, scissors, shoot! It’s one of the most simplest games you can play to cure boredom or settle disputes, and it’s also the basis for an inventive new Android game.

Rock Paper Scissors Combat is a combination of chess and the rock, paper, scissors pastime. The object of the game is to capture an opponents flag, which is positioned somewhere safe on a board. (Think of it as the king in chess.) Players must then attack each other using a number of randomized icons representing rock, paper, or scissors. An opponents icons remain hidden in order to maintain a level of mystery, but the weapon is revealed once two pieces are close enough to trigger a battle.

The old rules of rock, paper, scissors apply: rock beats scissors but loses to paper; scissors beats paper but loses to rock; and paper beats rock but loses o scissors. The losing piece of a battle is removed from the board and the winning piece remains visible. Opponents can then position their remaining pieces in order to take down the opponent and reach the flag. In the event that both players have the same piece (i.e. rock vs. rock), a tie-breaker occurs where users select another piece to declare a winner for that particular face-off.

RPS Combat adds to the fun by adding a couple of caveats. Users can further protect their flag by positioning a trap door somewhere that will defeat any attacker. However, neither the flag nor the trap can be moved, so users must thinking carefully when placing either. The game would be better if it were possible to increase difficulty or play online, but Rock, Paper, Scissors is still an enjoyable take on RPS strategy.
