Millions of people interact with Android each day. Both the people who create the apps and those who consume them have a little bit of a learning curve the first time they try either activity, so we’re going to help new users out with both.
The good folks at Wiley Publishing sent us more books than we have room for in the Androinica library, so the gift is being passed on to our readers. We have three copies each of Amazing Android Apps for Dummies and Android Development for Dummies to give away. If you’re unfamiliar with either title, here’s a quick rundown.
Amazing Android Apps for Dummies is a mega-collection of Android apps organized by category. There are more than 180 apps listed based on productivity, tools, games, news, shopping, and more. Each has a breakdown of best features and use cases with reviews and screenshots. The fact that it’s a book means long lead times, so not all of the information is up-to-date (pricing, feature set), but this could be something handy to give a running start to a friend or family new to Android. The book retails for $18.99.
Android Application Development for Dummies will teach you how to create your app so maybe it will be listed in the next version of AAA for Dummies. Despite what the title would infer, you cannot be a dummy and build an app using this book. Like many other development books available, it assumes that you have some experience in Java or programming and tries to provide a foundational knowledge building specifically for Android.
Application Development for Dummies provides a lot of information for beginners looking to be guided through the process of creating their first Android app. Things like how to interact with the Android notification bar and understanding the way intents work are detailed in straight forward language. It seems like an easier way to start off (providing that have some knowledge of coding).

If you don't win a book here, Google has excellent tutorials and example code on their Android development site ( http://developer.android.com/index.html ). People who have some familiarity with Java development will find Android programming especially easy to learn. AND, it's fun to see your ideas show up on your smartphone !
