New Android devices seem to be popping up everyday. We have been seeing leaks about phones, seeing Honeycomb tablets from many different manufacturers, and now we are starting to see cheaper tablets from different companies. The newest of these “budget tablets” is the VIZIO 8″ tablet, model # VTAB1008.

According to the press release, VIZIO is dedicated to bringing “cutting edge technology and exceptional features at a competitive category price.” They go on to stay that their goal was to offer an “innovative tablet that breaks new ground and addresses the gaps in current offerings.” this is in line with VIZIO’s overall reputation in the world of consumer electronics.

The specs of the tablet are, in my opinion, just a little too weak to deliever on those promises. The official specifications for the device are:

  • 8″ touch screen with a 1024 x 768 resolution
  • Front facing VGA “chat” camera
  • 1GHz Processor
  • 512Mb of RAM
  • 4GB of built-in storage (expandable to 32GB)
  • Connectivity including: Micro HDMI, Micro USB, Micro SD, and Headphone Jack
  • Android 2.3

Now, most of those specs are fine for a budget device. I can live with the 512Mb of RAM, the low amount of storage, and event the screen resolution. What I don’t understand is why VIZIO wouldn’t put Honeycomb on this tablet. It is the version of Android designed for larger devices, and they have decided to ignore that.

On the whole, this device should be good for many consumers. Anyone looking for lower end Android tablet should defiantly consider this one. It is available at retailers including Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Costco, and Amazon today, and has a price tag of $299.

If you have one of these tablets, or are planning on getting one, leave a comment and let us know what you think.
