Aliens are invading and you’ve got to protect the Earth. It’s one of the oldest and most common stories in sci-fi, but Cowboys & Aliens is unique because that storyline plays out in the old west. Now the comic-turned-movie has become a comic-turned-movie-turned-game thanks to an adaption by Gameloft.
Cowboys & Aliens features title character Zeke taking down aliens and other foes on horseback and foot. The game is a 2D side-scroller rather than the 3D adventures Gameloft usually develops, so you’ll have a reduced field of travel and graphics quality. Players are armed with a revolver, rope, and “space rifle” to take down enemies as they move throughout multiple levels and settings (the screenshots made me think Sunset Riders with aliens).
Based on its requirement for Android 1.5 and up, and a lack of stunning graphics even for a 2D game, I’m guessing Cowboys is port of the Java game developed for the movie of the same name. I’ll have to test out the game before I can say for sure. Gameloft just released the game to the Android Market but didn’t list which phones are compatible. Given the shaky history of compatibility on the company’s games, I’m going to check to make sure my devices are supported before purchasing.
Those who don’t want to wait can grab Cowboys & Aliens from the Android Market for $2.99.
