Hot on the heels of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE release date announcment this morning, DroidLife has posted a rumor that the 3G Motorola Xoom will finally be getting its update to LTE starting in September. While this is bound to be welcome news for all the Xoom owners out there, it is more than a little overdue.

The update, which will be a hardware change from a 3G modem to an LTE compatibile modem, was originally supposed to happen back in May. It’s never really been clear as to why it has taken Motorola so long to get this update started, and they aren’t providing any details now.

We saw the hardware pass through the FCC a while back, so we know thats not the reason for the long delay. Its possible that Motorola needed some time to get the mail-in system ready for the flow of devices, but we may never know for sure.

It is important to note that this is just a rumor at this point. Until someone confirms with an official message from Motorola, or Moto tells us themselves, we can’t gaurentee this is happening. Its safe to say that this entire situation has turned into a minor disaster for Motorola, who have lost thier lead as the first LTE tablet to market.

As mentioed above, new broke today that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE will be hitting Verizon store shelves on Thursday, July 28. Charles did a great write up on that story, and I recommend you go check it out.

Update: DroidLife has given more confirmation for this rumor, in the form of an email screenshot. You can check it out below. Get your Xoom ready for some 4G goodness.
