The HTC Status is coming to AT&T, which has just officially announced that it will carry the Facebook-centric phone known in Europe as the HTC ChaCha. Confirming earlier rumors, AT&T says that it will offer the phone, but it still hasn’t offered any details on price or availability.

The Status will be an Android 2.3-powered smartphone aimed at a variety of people. There’s been a thirst for devices with a physical portrait keyboard, and others may be attracted to what should be a comparatively affordable smartphone that let’s users ride the Android wave. The Status has 512 MB RAM, an 800 MHz processor, and two cameras – 5 megapixel rear and VGA front-facing camera – to allow photo sharing and video chat with ease.

The Facebook button, located prominently at the bottom of the HTC Status, is a premiere feature of the phone. While the Android share function already offers a way to pass content into the official Facebook app, the blue “F” logo on the Status enables one-touch sharing. Pressing the button from the homescreen provides a shortcut to Facebook status updates, pressing from the gallery will share a photo, and long-pressing will bring-up the check-in page.

The Status will draw-in the hyper-social Facebook crowd, but device limitations will alienate all “hardcore” users and even people looking for more options. Because the HTC Status has a 2.6-inch touchscreen, it has a lower resolution that is not compatible with all Android apps. Don’t buy this unless you plan on spending some time complaining about being unable to use many of the great Android apps and games announced throughout the year. If you or someone you love just wants something simple to share and communicate, the Status may fit the bill.
