How many Android phones are sold every day? A lot. Google VP of Engineering Andy Rubin just tweeted more than “500,000 Android devices are activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4 w/w.”

The number of daily activations for Android devices has risen steadily in the past few months. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt pegged the activation total at 350,000 in February, but Product Manager Hugo Barra upped the ante to 450,000 in May. Rubin raising the bar to 500,000 today makes me wonder if we might see an announcement of 1 million daily activations before the year is out.

I’m assuming that the 4.4 w/w portion of Rubin’s tweet refers to week over week growth rate. That means if the number is 500,000 today, a 4.4 w/w ratio should increase the total to 520,000 next week. Of course, you all know that my math skills are deplorable and I could be completely wrong about that.

What I can tell you is that the demand for Android products continues to rise. Devices continue to come in all types of flavors and reach most corners of the globe. Now comes the hard part of finding a way to make that ecosystem of diverse gadgets and users play nice together. More attention needs to be paid to some corners of the Android map and some fragmentation issues need to be addressed, but Google seems to be on top of it. Google and the OHA must be doing something right to crack half a million every day.
