Android App Reviews, Android Apps

The news never stops, and few apps illustrate that as well as News360, the just-launched Android Honeycomb app that delivers news in an excellent format. While there are many options for reading about what’s going on in the world, News360 sets itself apart by organizing thousands of stories into one appealing presentation of the day’s events.

News360 is essentially Google News with an optimized format for Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Rather than post a stream with dozens of articles covering the same topic, News360 groups those articles around one big story. For instance, MSNBC wrote today that U.S. home sales rose last month, but that article may not provide enough information to satisfy the reader. News360 links to 67 more articles covering the same topic, giving readers more choice over where they get their news.

The app also features the ability to customize the “My Stories” section with articles that most interest the reader, increasing the odds that “Trending” and “Popular” stories will be more in-line with their interests.

Choice is great, but the visual aspect of Honeycomb proves to be pretty special in News360. In 360 View, an assembly line of photographs moves across the screen, and tapping on any particular image will then link to a full article. A preview of each article is shown within the app, and an in-browser view is also available by simply swiping up. People interested in visuals will be pleased to know that a gallery of related images also appears to the right.

Anyone with a Honeycomb tablet should give News360 a try. The app grabs stories from more than 1,500 news sources, displays them beautifully, and browses according to location or category, customizes sections, and can save articles for offline reading. I’ve been using it for about a week now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Download the free app now and take it for a spin.
