Android App Reviews, Entertainment

Android phones offer a new way to watch multimedia with the official Cartoon Network Android app now in the Market. Available for Android 2.1 and higher phones, the Cartoon Network Video app streams full episodes of a “huge video library” of popular shows like Bakugan, Ben10 Ultimate Alien, and Young Justice.

The video quality of those streams are horrible, sadly. Even on a stable WiFi connection with respectable speeds, the video is overly-compressed and pixelated to the point that you’re better off just waiting until you can get to a television. But if you insist on watching on the phone, Cartoon Network does a very good job of organizing shows, recently added, and popular episodes. Users can also browse the schedule to see what time shows broadcast on television.

Adult Swim fans will quickly notice that this app offers only the cartoons geared towards children. That appears to be a safety and branding decision, which makes perfect sense. The last thing I’d want is for my nephew to watch Generator Rex and end up clicking on an episode of Robot Chicken. Adult Swim shows will become available through a different app soon.

Android 2.1 or higher phones should be able to download Cartoon Network Video, however it may be inaccessible to some phones. I’m only able to see it on 2 of the 3 phones I’m using at the moment, and it doesn’t scale up on tablets.
