The PlayStation Phone saga began a long time ago, but it wasn’t until recently that Sony Ericsson acknowledged that it even existed. The rumor that SE was making a PlayStation Phone started in early August last year, and on October 27th we learned that the device definitely was real thanks to a series of prototype pictures.

Since then, we’ve heard rumor after rumor – about specs, names and possible launch dates, and we’ve seen a beautifully offbeat commercial featuring an Android getting human thumbs thanks to good ol’ back alley surgery. Now, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has finally been announced. The presentation might not have brought us a lot more info than what we already knew, but at least it’s official now.

During Sony Ericsson’s live event that just ended, Rikko Sakaguchi talked about the ecosystem needed in order to launch a proper gaming phone, and the company feels it can deliver that. According to Sakaguchi, the Xperia Play is “the world’s first true gaming phone” and even “the best smartphone ever.”

Games on the Xperia Play are launched via the Xperia Play Launcher, and among other things, it will show you games on the Android Market that are optimized for the device. The Xperia Play is the first “PlayStation certified” phone, and more of them will follow that will be able to play classic PS One titles via the PlayStation Suite.

The SE Xperia Play – often referred to as the PlayStation Phone, is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and it will start shipping around the world in March. One of the first markets where the device will be launched is the US, and it’s coming to Verizon Wireless this spring.

Sony Ericsson believes the Xperia Play will “revolutionize entertainment on a smartphone.” What do you think?
