The Samsung Galaxy Tab finally has a successor in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The second Android-based slate from Samsung was announced today at Mobile World Congress, giving Samsung its own answer the Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets being released by competitors.

The Galaxy 10.1 name reveals an obvious screen size (10.1-inch), but the device also has a very thin physical build. At 10.9 mm thin and 599 grams, it is a surprisingly light mobile device. Thankfully, there’s nothing light on the internals as the device features a dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera with HD playback and recording, and surround sound. Samsung managed to deliver an “Entertainment powerhouse” that is set to debut first on Vodafone (price and date not yet disclosed).

I managed to get some brief hands-on time with the Tab 10.1 after the Samsung Unpacked event, and I liked what I saw early-on. The device runs Android 3.0 – which we have covered already, so read that for a refresher - so you will get the Google experience and have access to more features than the original Galaxy Tab that Samsung customized. From a hardware standpoint, the Tab 10.1 is incredibly light for something of its size. I wasn’t able to hold it with one hand, but it feels lighter than an iPad and will be easy to carry.

So with already great software and great hardware, it should be an obvious purchase, right? Well, of course not. We’ve seen that great products have become less-desirable because of high prices, and it will be important for Samsung and Vodafone to deliver the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at a reasonable price.

Here is a list of tech specs released by Samsung.
