Amazon Prime members get free streaming to Google TV and Android phones

Amazon shoppers can pay $79 each year to get free two-day shipping and one-day shipping for $3.99 per item. In addition to these S&H upgrades, Amazon Prime members now get the bonus of free movie streaming to their Google TV set-top boxes.

Since yesterday, Prime members have been able to access more than 5,000 movies and television programs in the Amazon Instant Video library. The Google TV blog just confirmed that AIV is also compatible with the Logitech Revue or Sony Internet TV’s, meaning you can watch Charlie’s Angels or Dr. Who right now.

It also appears that this service works on Flash-enabled Android phones. I first noticed that Aaron of Streamly.tv was able to access streaming videos on his device, and a quick scan of the web revealed that others are also able to get it working. Results and performance vary according to phone and network connection.

Amazon has only enabled a small portion of its instant streaming library, so you may not be able to cancel that Netflix membership just yet. But anyone who orders from Amazon often enough ought to consider joining the program for its special reward. Netflix’s sheepish and drawn-out entry into Android makes the deal even more enticing.
