Sprint adding $10 fee to all new smartphone contracts

HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G users have been complaining about having to pay a $10 “Premium Data” surcharge every month because their smartphones consume so much data. Or rather because their phones have the perceived likelihood to consume so much data.

Good news, 4G users: you’ll no longer be charged more for owning 4G-capable phones! No, Sprint isn’t rescinding the fee; Sprint is just applying it to every new customer. Beginning January 30, all smartphone activations on Sprint will require a $10 monthly Premium Data add-on. This fee will apply to every smartphone rather just the 4G capable phones that have been hit with the required additional cost.

Sprint says that this change is necessary to maintain its “affordable unlimited plans” and still keep up with the growing demand of mobile phones. Rather than continue the charade of “premium data” on the EVO 4G and Epic 4G (my opinion, of course), Sprint has decided to institute a portfolio-wide fee on all smartphone users.

“While some of our competitors impose overage charges and complex plans, Sprint continues to provide a worry-free, unlimited data experience while on the Sprint network,” said Bob H. Johnson, president of Sprint’s consumer business. “This is responsible, sustainable and reflects our commitment to simplicity and value.”
