Sony Explains No Froyo for X10, Proves They Don’t Understand Android

Although the news probably didn’t surprise too many people, earlier today, Sony Ericsson finally stated that there will never be a Froyo upgrade for the Xperia X10. Now, they’ve released an explanation for that decision, saying:
“We believe the features included in the Android 2.1 phone are on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2.”
So, Sony Ericsson seems to believe that users are better off not having:
- A system-wide speed increase due to JIT compiler
- Flash 10.1 support
- USB tethering and WiFi hotspot
- Voice dialing via bluetooth
- Better Exchange support
- Install apps to SD
- Push notifications
Not to mention support for Chrome to Phone, Voice Actions or the newest version of YouTube.
SE later dialed back that original comment saying, “We believe the version of Android 2.1 which we have implemented on the X10 is suitable for the hardware of these particular models.”
So, really SE just didn’t want to come out and say it was hardware issues. They wanted to pass the buck to Android. Nice try.

Well, I'll be sure to never buy a Sony Ericsson phone now then.
Its going to be a growing list of manufactures that I'm going to be avoiding soon…Samsung…Sony Ericsson…who will be next on the list
Sony and samsung both don't care about their customers to bad for them good for apple and motorola ect. Time for some american company to stand up and make the pledge to keep you up to date.
Very very bad decission for SE. I'll switch to other brand as soon as possible. My patience end right now.
This is the one big hurdle with Android which google has got to overcome. Initial success of the platform is good, but to maintain it google needs to apply some basic controls so that upgrades are controlled by google and not the individual companies. Why buy a phone that will be essentially abandoned after one upgrade, if you even get that? Look how long its taken other manufacturers to get a froyo update to their phones. As I see it this is THE issue with Android.
Jack this isn't Android's problem. This is SE's problem. They've spent the last year royally fucking over their X10 users… I'd venture to say any X10 user even remotely unhappy with this won't be buying another SE phone for a long time.
Hardware!?! Give me a break! How different is the hardware to the Nexus One/HTC Desire which both came out earlier than the X10? It's neither Android or hardware issues that's preventing them from releasing Froyo, it's purely down to lack of software engineering at SE themselves. I feel sorry for anyone who buys SE smartphones, because they are buying a broken product to begin with, with little or hope of fixes down the line.
not the first but the last SE phone i ever bought…
SE will still update the x10 series, just not with new versions of android
I think this is a smart choice
yes yes, we are all disappointed, but: I really love my X10 mini, and c'mon guys: did you ever receive a new Windows version from the OEM of your PC?
whats wrong with you Sony Ericsson???????
