Xmarks for Android now available

Xmarks is a popular tool for desktop computers that lets you sync and backup your browser bookmarks. For example, you can synchronize your saved URLs across supported browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari.

The company has now released an app that brings Xmarks sync to Android, and it lets users easily access their desktop bookmarks on their mobile devices. When you launch the app, it will provide you with your list of sites – organized like you’ve arranged them on your computer. Tapping on a bookmark will launch the URL in your default Android browser.

Xmarks for Android also lets you grab any currently active tabs (“Open Tab Sync”) in the browser on your desktop computer, which definitely could come in handy. Let’s say you have three sites open in Firefox when you leave home – with Xmarks you can continue browsing those URLs on your phone later on.

The Xmarks Android app is only available for Premium users of the service, and it has received favorable reviews in the Market so far. The utility can be used for two weeks without paying if you want to try it out.

Cool! I love Xmarks on my PC and have really wanted it on my DINC. However, it was just a month or so ago that Xmarks was sending me messages that they were going to shut their doors at the first of the year and I should migrate to a different system. What happened? Is the company stable enough to hang around for a while?

LastPass bought Xmarks. The service will continue to exist exactly as it used to. They'll use a fremium model. Free on desktop as it is right now and a premium subscription to to sync with iPhone and Android devices. You'll be able to have a single subscription to sync both your bookmarks and passwords.
