HTC Desire owners with root access: care for some Gingerbread?

Android Hacks, HTC
It was only two days ago Grandmaster G released Gingerbread’s source code, but Android 2.3 ROMs are already all over the place. The Nexus One got one very early, and then the Samsung Galaxy S received Gingerbread through a port of the Nexus S firmware.
Now a surprisingly functional ROM of Android 2.3 for the HTC Desire has appeared, courtesy of AdamG at the XDA. Gingerbread Oxygen v2.0 is a pre-beta release, but it’s probably one of the most stable custom Android 2.3 ROMs yet for any phone. Nearly everything works: Wi-Fi, voice, GPS and even the camera, but the last pieces will only fall into place once the Nexus One gets an official Android 2.3 upgrade.
My first Gingerbread impressions: love the new black menus, and the screen off animation is just as fun and slick as it looks in videos. So, Desire owners with root access who want to try out the latest version of our favorite mobile OS — look no further and visit the xda-developers. If you make a backup with Clockworkmod before flashing the Gingerbread ROM, you can go back to your previous setup whenever you feel like it.
Update: An even more polished release now available.

I just flashed the ROM and it works pretty good. Not usable for daily use yet but interesting to use for a moment. The lock animation is really good indeed! Looking forward to a stable release.
I'm about to make myself sound like a gigantic noob here…. But I've never bothered with the idea of rooting my phone until I saw this, got a bit excited. So I've downloaded unrevoked3 and rooted the phone using that. But for flashing the phone it only seems to accept .img files but the download from xda-developers is a .zip. How do I turn the .zip into a .img for flashing?
Install ROM Manager from the Market and use the app to flash ClockworkMod recovery. Then use ROM Manager to boot into recovery mode. From there, turn off signature verification and select the "flash ZIP from SD card" option to install the new ROM.
thats great, i was wondering about backup options before flashing, looks like Clockworkmod alleviates my worries in this regard..thanks My recent post Google Maps For Android Now Lets You Download Maps For Offline
