Android Market Now Accepting Essays Instead of Haikus

We’ve seen a number of changes to the Android Market recently including content ratings, the market app redesign, a shortened refund window, extra screenshots, YouTube previews, higher res promo images, and space for developers to list recent changes to an app. Now, developers are getting even more space to tell us all about their fantastic app. On the Developer Console, the app description and recent changes field has changed from a mere 325 characters, to 4,000 characters for the description and 500 characters for the recent changes.

This change will allow developers to not only give a better description of their app, and how it differentiates itself from the myriad clones throughout the Android Market, but it will allow developers to add in plenty more SEO. Apparently, this new 4,000 character limit brings the Android Market on par with the iPhone App Store, so when devs port over their apps, they can just copy/paste the description, and do a quick find/replace on any references to iOS.

I think it’s a nice policy change. What do you guys think?

As a developer I'm quite excited about the character limit increase.

SEO aside, now it's going to be possible to communicate vital information such as proper support channels and procedures, problematic devices, known issues, etc.

I tend to think that while it's great on a phone, it'll be most useful when a web frontend is added to the Market.
