Yahoo! Messenger for Android gets video chat, Mail gets multiple accounts

November 10, 2010 | by Andrew Kameka

Yahoo! Messenger now officially supports video chat. Though the app initially appeared on the Android Market last week, Yahoo has waited until now to make it official after a recent update addressed some concerns and optimized performance.

The Yahoo! Messenger Video Add-on app enables video chat on a myTouch 4G and HTC EVO 4G, which are currently the only apps officially supported. You can try your luck with other 2.2 phones with front-facing camera, but problems may arise. Messenger places free video calls over 3G, 4G, or WiFi, and works with the equivalent apps for iPhone and PC/Mac. I tested briefly earlier today and there are some problems to work out, but it’s become less laggy since I tested the leaked beta app.

Also getting an update today is Yahoo Mail. The latest version supports viewing sent/received photos in a gallery and people with multiple email accounts from Yahoo can access them all within one app. Throw in the photo/video sharing and integrated contacts support from the Messenger app and Yahoo Android fans have a busy day.
