Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone

An invitation to a Sony Ericsson event on December 9 that’s said to bring “the most anticipated presentation of the past 10 years” has been posted by French tech blog NowhereElse. The invitation shows the well-known PlayStation icons next to a phone symbol, which strongly suggests that the event is concerning Sony Ericsson’s PlayStation Phone.

Of course, there’s currently no way to verify the validity of the invitation, but it seems like December 9 may be an exciting day for fans of Android gaming. Sony Ericsson’s CEO Bert Nordberg recently commented on the PlayStation Phone in a Wall Street Journal interview, and we might see the device sooner than we think.

Here are some more details about the PlayStation Phone, all according to a trusted tipster MobileCrunch has been in touch with:

  • The screen of the device is “mind-blowing” and might feature Sony’s Bravia technology.
  • An off-contract price of around $500 including 5 free games is considered by SE.
  • The PlayStation Phone will likely not be able to run downloaded PlayStation Portable games – instead it will feature a new line-up of games designed specifically for the platform.
  • The name Sony Ericsson has for that platform is indeed Z-System as previously reported, and the company uses it for both the platform and the distribution center.
  • It’s unclear whether the games for the phone will be distributed exclusively via the company’s own store, or through the Market as well. It has been suggested that SE is working closely with Google to create a section in the Market that only will be available for PlayStation phones.
  • Luckily, the games will not be as expensive as PSP titles. They’re reported to cost like regular mobile games (under $10).
