Samsung preparing Google TV for 2011

Samsung may already have its own televisions with integrated apps, but that won’t stop the Korean manufacturer from giving Google TV a go. According to a BusinessWeek report, Samsung is “open” to using Intel chips in its products and is expected to display its Google TV-enabled screen in January.
The television market is expected to experience a difficult period because of large inventory of products, so there will be serious price competition among companies. A Samsung television with Google TV will likely set-up direct competition with Sony Internet TV in early 2011, a time when plenty of people may be in the market for a new television in the run-up to the Super Bowl and March Madness.
At CES 2010, Samsung was very excited about its Smart TV lines that featured integrated apps for Hulu Plus, Netflix, Blockbuster, Skype, and more. Google TV may not have all of these features, but Samsung will likely want to diversify and offer a GTV product. It’s possible, but not confirmed, that we could see the product on stage at CES 2011.

Integrating GTV with televisions is a bad idea. External set top boxes are the way to go. Look how quickly the hardware is maturing on our phones. I think it is safe to say that the hardware is going to mature for GTV as well. I suspect the GTV related hardware is going to be outdated long before the screen. When I buy a TV, I'm not expecting to upgrade for at least 5 years. Imagine how different the GTV hardware will be in 5 years though. I don't want to be tempted to pay for a screen to go along with my new GTV hardware. I'll buy a $300 set top box and upgrade it when things get better and keep my existing TV.
I bet GTV software will to be upgradeable so I'm not too worried in that respect. What is not clear is if the concept will catch the mass adoption. My recent post AC for Android 710 Released- Features Some UI Gloss and Updated German Translation
