Riding the wave of smartphone data released today, Nielsen has shared new insight about the trends of smartphone buyers. For starters, Nielsen reminded us that they’re a small slice of the pie.
According to Nielsen, only 28 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers use a smartphone. The remaining 7 out of 10 subscribers are running feature phones, though that could change as smartphones become more affordable and appealing. Smartphone adoption is also trending upwards based on stats that show 41 percent of new buyers have chosen a smartphone. NPD and Canalys can tell you which smartphone they chose.
Android’s market share has grown from less than 10 percent in Q4 2009 to just under 20 percent in Q3 2010. These numbers reflect current market share, not the percentage of new smartphone buyers reported earlier this morning. Nielsen also states that Android was the leading OS among new smartphone buyers last quarter.
Other figures reported by Nielsen include:
- Half of Android users are under the age of 35, the highest percent of any OS.
- 42 percent of all smartphone buyers are 18-34.
- Smartphone buyers are more diverse than feature phone users; about 20 percent Hispanic, 10 percent Black, and 6 percent Asian/Pacific Islander.
