Rumor: Android 3.0 Gingerbread possibly coming next week to developers, video calling a major feature?

You have got to be careful with rumors, but anytime Gingerbread comes up we have to say something. According to the guys over at Android Police a “trusted source” has informed them that Android 3.0′s (codenamed Gingerbread) source developer kit should be hitting developers sometime next week.

Some of the points of this alleged SDK release are

developers (and anyone really) getting their hands on the latest emulator to show off stock Android 3.0 functionality
new additions to the Android API which will show us some of the new features of 3.0
what the actual version number of Gingerbread will be (no indication yet between 2.5 or 3.0, or anything really)

Android Police also points out that Android is on a “6 month release track” with FroYo being released on May 20th of this year. If Google sticks to their guns then the next iteration of Android won’t be released until about 5 weeks from now, but at this point it’s anyones guess to when this will be coming. Another commentor points out that Android has released new versions every fall since its debut — Android 1.0 fall 2008, Android 2.0 fall 2009, and Android 3.0 fall 2010? Looks like we will see soon.

Also, according to Android and Me, video calling will be a major part of the newest Gingerbread update and will help “change the way that we use our phones”. It looks like Google may be bringing Google Talk Video to the Android platform, so instead of using 3rd party apps like Qik, Android users may be able to take advantage of the native Talk application. This could be a big win for this Android user as Google Talk is one of the primary ways that I communicate with my Android device. With all of the new Androids out their with dual cams it only makes sense for Google to add this functionality to their platform.

I find this hard to believe because they still havent added a simple file transfer option or any of the other other messenger clients fun features .. they just abandoned Gtalk long time ago.

Can't w8 for Gingerbread to grace my sexy nexy (N1). I love my Nexus one…and i know i will always experience the love of an upgrade b4 most of those in the Android army. Google i am comfident u have tons of goodies instore for us, but also hoping for navigation maps that will always be on my device just like what is in the new Htc locations. I love the google voice navigation but some times it is of no help when u really need it bcz of lack of reception in certain areas. I wud like it on my phone or some sort of back up map that will reside on my device irrespective of ur signal
