Google Car Home updated, added to Android Market

October 1, 2010 | by Andrew Kameka

Google has made its Car Home app available in the Android Market. The app has been given a visual facelift and settings that may make it less likely that users turn to the alternative car dock apps currently popular in the Market.

Car Home now features customizable shortcuts for car home functions, saved directions shortcuts, and launching other applications. Users are also able to rearrange the placement of shortcuts, change wallpaper or icon tinting, and automatically start Bluetooth when launched.

Phones that don’t run stock Android may have some trouble launching the app. It took me a while to figure out how to get the app to launch since it doesn’t appear in the app drawer or launch from the Market. Here’s how I got it to work on my EVO:

  1. Install the app from AppBrain. (Make sure you use via AppBrain FastWeb install)
  2. Launch the Car Panel app and you will see an option saying “Car Home.”
  3. Check “Use by default for this action” and then press Car Home.
  4. Boom goes the dynamite.

So what do you guys think? Is this good enough to make you stick with the default app instead of Car Dock 2 or Custom Car Home?

Non-stock phones may be unable to download the app
