Samsung Captivate gets GPS fix, Vibrant patch still in the works
September 22, 2010 | by Andrew Kameka
AT&T, Samsung
The Samsung Captivate for AT&T and the Vibrant for T-Mobile are both great Android phones. However, they shipped with a nasty bug that prevented the phone from maintaining accurate GPS reports, a very undesirable flaw considering the amount of apps that depend on location.
The official Samsung USA account just announced a short while ago that an update is coming to the AT&T Captivate over the next few weeks (update notifications will appear in roll-out stages). In the update is a fix for the troubled GPS, as well as some other minor improvements and fixes.
That’s great news for AT&T customers, but people who own the T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S will have to wait a tad longer. Samsung hasn’t announced a timetable for that device to be fixed; offering only the following tweet after what I’m sure was a torrent of “What about me?” replies:
In regards to updates from our other Carrier partners, we are working diligently to release these improvements as well! #GalaxyS

It would be great news for Captivate owners, except that the "update" in fact did nothing to make the GPS on my phone work— it still cannot get a fix on satellites. This is outrageous.
i have the vibrant and really like it but im ready to ask for a refund…im well outside of the 14 days for returns but this is ridiculous and a manuf. defect. my old HTC G1 gps worked better than this. I was willing to be patient but this is too much. they said september…now its going to be even longer?
Sick and tired of no gps
I have to say – it's better than nothing but it is still only about a C+ in delivery. I seriously hope Samsung plans on fully fixing the issue. This gps "fix" was a good start but I feel they still have a ways to go. Maybe the pressure to get anything working was the reason it's still very marginal gps at this point.
I followed the suggested route of using the Check for SW updates on the Captivate. As of 1/2/2011, I have not been able to locate ANY upddates… I'm in upstate NY, does my geographic location affect rollout of updates?
|I got a Samsung galaxy tablet for my wife, download a few application but i could not figure it out how can i save a picture to the gallery. Or any other data. Since there is no external memory on the tablet i think there is an easy way but im new to the Android honeycomb and can not find it.
