Android users don’t have a lot of sex partners, but they do watch a lot of mobile TV

Internet dating site OKCupid reported yesterday that Android users have half as many sex partners as iPhone users by the time they reach 30 years of age. Maybe that’s because Android users spend so much time watching mobile TV? (Kidding, kidding!)
MobiTV, one of the leading mobile video providers, found that Android users were far and away the biggest consumers of mobile television during the 2010 World Cup. While Palm and iPhone users watched 84 minutes and 77.8 minutes of television respectively, Android users consumed 125.7 minutes per viewer. BREW users watched 84 minutes, RIM watched 65.4, and Windows Mobile 62.7.
Not surprisingly, screen size played a role in viewership. There was a direct relationship between average minutes viewed and device screen size; the larger the screen, the likelier people were to watch.

- 3 inch screen 67.4 average minutes viewed

The validity of statistics always comes into question in stories like this, but MobiTV powers services on several outlets, including the TV options on all of the four major carriers in the U.S. It came in handy for me during the World Cup as Sprint TV got a lot of burn when I couldn’t get to a television or watch on ESPN360.com.
This past World Cup also taught me that mobile television is a complement to TV, not a replacement. Even on the large screen of my EVO, I sometimes found it difficult to follow some World Cup games. The ball was small, some camera angles were too far out and clearly made for TV, and the stream wasn’t always dependable (more an issue of my carrier than MobiTV, however). But I did find it useful and better than being left in the dark while my favorite sporting event took place. Best of all, I now have an excuse for falling within the Android category of this chart! Hooray! (kind of).
