People often ask if and when will their phone get Froyo, a tough question to address since manufacturers and carriers never give clear answers. Because companies play coy, it’s usually a guessing game.
I don’t know when, but I’d guess that the HTC Magic on Vodafone will update to Froyo (Android 2.2).
We know that the Magic is capable of getting the update based on comments from Google and the promise by T-Mobile USA to update its American cousin. And while the myTouch and Magic are technically different so you can’t assume one will follow the other, comments from Vodafone support staff make it seem as if Froyo will arrive on the Magic soon.
Last week, reader David Wiestruck linked me to one of the many Vodafone forum threads with customers asking when the Magic would be updated beyond Android 1.6. Rather than continue to give the panned “we don’t address rumors,” an administrator had this to say:
I can confirm that Google have never supported 2.1 on this device, so that’s not going to be available. With regards to 2.2 on the other hand… I’m afraid I can’t confirm that because the information is classed as confidential at present. As soon as we’re allowed to say anything we will do, but I think some of you may already be able to draw a conclusion from the mere fact that it’s confidential
That’s far from definitive, but yesterday France’s SFR confirmed that it will deliver Froyo to the HTC Magic. That means there’s definitely an update in development for the Magic, making it likely that it will come to Vodafone.
