HTC Incredible doesn’t charge its battery entirely?

HTC Droid Incredible

I have had my HTC Incredible for 5 days now and pretty much love the phone. The day after I received it I started noticing something somewhat strange. I usually leave my battery charging all night long on my bed stand as I use my phone for an alarm. When taking the charger off the Incredible I noticed that my battery percent dropped to 93% within in a few minutes and by the time I got to work (about 2 hours later) my battery was already at 70%. I could only make it until 4PM with very minimal use before the battery quit on me. Something else that I found was that using the HTC battery widget that my “100%” mark is about 1/3 of the way down the scale. Does my phone think that 2/3 of the battery is actually the whole battery?

So, like any good Android fanboy I decided to scour the forums for a fix or some other poor Incredible users that could relate to my woes. I found them and it appears that there may be a problem with the way that the HTC Incredible charges batteries in that it doesn’t charge them the entire way. When users have used an external wall charger to charge their batteries, they have had no problem with the extremely fast percentage drop and their battery lasted a lot longer.

There may be a temporary fix. There are two forums that are detailing the same problem as above, both with different fixes that are working for some.

  1. At Android forums they are suggesting that when the Incredible is on and has a green light telling you that it is completely charged, you should keep the charger plugged in, turn off the phone, and wait until the light at the top turns from orange (charging) to green (fully charged) again. Even when it reaches green again, you may want to unplug the charger and plug back in to make sure it is charged. This will charge the rest of the battery.
  2. The peeps over at incredibleforum.com had a different route that is working for some. Before charging, open up the Desktop Clock app on the Incredible, hit the back button to see the detailed part of the app, and then plug your charger in. You will notice the percentage in the bottom right corner of the app. Apparently, this method allowed the battery to be charged completely.

Only the first method worked for me; my battery has been off the charger and used heavily for 2 hours and I am still at 94%. That’s more like it. Hopefully, if this is a device issue with the Incredible, HTC will put out some sort of fix for it as turning off your phone to charge the battery completely is not acceptable.

Is anyone else having these same issues?
