Today the Weather Channel app for Android received an update to version 2.3.14. The Weather Channel app is definitely one of the best weather apps for Android and is in close contention with other quality apps like Weatherbug.
The update has some new features like custom tabs, new desktop widgets, and “Did you know?” weather fact section, and TruPoint Nowcasts (better name maybe?). The Weather Channel is claiming that the app now has better tracking and also improves battery life and load times. In some very quick testing, The Weather Channel app found my location in about 6 seconds right after a fresh install. It even got my town name right, something that Weatherbug still has a problem with.
So, give the new Weather Channel update and try and let us know what you think about that “improved” battery life and new widgets!

I mostly like The Weather Channel update. At one point, for some reason, my widget skin went transparent! I loved it. It was clearly a fluke error of some sort because the next time I power-cycled my phone, the opaque skin came back. Give me a transparent Widget! Also, I wish I could find a way to turn off "Did you know?". But in general, I like the new look. Can't say I've noticed any power savings but, it certainly didn't reduce my batter life any.
Oh. One more thing. A bug carry over since I started using The Weather Channel android app: After receiving a weather alert, the notification bar icon will NEVER clear until I use Task Killer to the TWC. I've let it sit there for 24 hours after the alert has passed. It just WILL NOT go away on it's own. What's with that?
I value the blog post.Really looking forward to read more. Much obliged.
I've just had to uninstall this PoS as it was the single biggest battery drain on my HTC Desire. Sorry Waether Channel, but the app simply does NOT need a constantly running service. Give us an option to set update intervals like any half decent app!
wow thanks to the weather channel app my phone didnt even last a day it used 68% of my battery! DELETED! no ty you can keep ur app weather channel!
how do you delete, I am trying to delete, but it seems to still be on my phone and is draining my battery!
hey guys (Damon and AJS),,, I was suspecting that the Weather Channel app was draining my battery but I got nothing to prove it. Do you know of any market application that can tell how much battery this weather application actually uses?
i'm sorry. i won't install apps that i can't exit or quit without uninstalling. adios, weather channel!
I just downloaded the WeatherPro app (by MeteoGroup). It comes with national satellite and radar loops. Each one only takes about 30 seconds to load on 3G, so the battery usage is not too high. It's really been cool seeing the current storm bomb in the Midwest and move east on both the satellite and radar! It also has the usual 7-day forecasts which can be broken down into detailed 3-hour reports as well! It's definitely worth the ~$3.50 (charge is in Euros as the company is based in the UK). If you do download it, you may want to first go to settings and change the units from metric to U.S. Standard and put a U.S. town into locations to load up the U.S. maps.
