Chalk up another loss for Google today as Samsung and Yahoo! have jointly-announced a partnership that will see Yahoo! services loaded onto Samsung phones. And no, this is not limited to Samsung’s proprietary Bada platform – some Android phones will get the Yahoo! treament as well.
The new partnership calls for Samsung to include several Yahoo! services on its phones, including Mail, Messenger, Front Page, Search, Flickr, News, Finance, Contacts, Calendar, and Weather. Fans of these services have to use the standard email app for Android or third-party apps supporting those services (if they’re able to use at all). The new partnership will bring official integration into Samsung phones, some of which will be Android devices.
This is great news if you’re someone who uses Yahoo! but incredibly disappointing if you’re a Google fan who was interested in the Samsung Galaxy S. There’s no word if these apps will be replacing Google services (probably) or merely pre-loaded as the primary option. I requested further comment from Yahoo! and have yet to hear back.
