Sprint may announce HTC Supersonic and 4G network next week

The Wall Street Journal isn’t exactly saying anything Earth-shattering, but they are lending some cred to a rumor that’s been circulating for weeks. The WSJ reported today that Sprint is expected to use CTIA as a launch pad for the HTC Supersonic, the first 4G WiMax phone.

The Supersonic would be attractive on Sprint’s 4G network, which will provide the fastest available speeds on mobile devices (according to Sprint, at least). Many have suggested it would debut on Sprint soon and the fact that Sprint is hosting an invitation-only event next Tuesday at CTIA to announce something big makes me think the WSJ and everyone else may be on to something.

Sprint has been losing customers for several business quarters, and this is the kind of big splash the company needs to stabilize its performance. Sprint’s last trump card – the Palm Pre – has been surpassed by Verizon’s Pre Plus, so a new high-speed network and device could do the trick. Here are the rumoured specs of the Supersonic.

  • 4.3” AMOLED touchscreen
  • 1GHZ Snapdragon
  • 1 GB ROM and 512 RAM
  • 5 MP Camera with Dual LED, autofocus, and Digital zoom
  • 3.5mm Head Jack
  • Bluetooth and GPS
  • FM Radio
  • Kickstand (to prop the phone up)
  • MicroUSB and MicroSD
