Samsung announces Galaxy S Android superphone

Samsung wasted no time in grabbing headlines at CTIA. The company today announced The Galaxy S, a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a 1 GHz processor and Android 2.1 OS. The Galaxy S features a customized version of Android using the updated TouchWiz interface seen on the Samsung Beam.

The Galaxy S will be available in Europe, North America, Latin America, Australia, and Asia “soon” based on the press release. It has “advanced Location Based Services” to go with Layar, and a “Social Hub” that delivers always-running social network connections. This is part of Samsung’s “Smart Life” system that delivers briefings on user-defined content. Calendars, news feeds, friend activity, weather, and more are available in these briefings.

Other key features include:

  • Daily Briefing: Offers instant access to weather, news, stocks, and the scheduler.
  • All Share: Enables inter-device connectivity via DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology.
  • Home Cradle: Enables use as a digital photo frame, table clock, calendar, and music station.
  • Write and go: Jot down an idea first and later decide on a format such as SMS/ MMS, email, calendar or memo.
  • Swype: Provides fast and easy way to input text on screen while on-the-move.
  • ThinkFree: Apps to view and edit Microsoft Office 2007 documents.
  • Smart Alarm: Wakes up with a natural alarm sound and automatically turned-on display light.
