Rumor: Announcement on paid apps in Canada could come next week

The Montreal Gazette has published a story that says Canadian Android users could finally get a concrete statement about when they will gain access to paid apps in the Android Market. In an article about the 9-month wait to see paid apps in the Market, a Gazette writer says that “Google is working on the problem and hopes to make an announcement next week.”

Canadians have waited nearly a year to find out when they’d be able to try out the same great apps that their neighbors to the south have had for a long time. This is the kind of news to give them a pick-me-up after suffering a loss to the U.S. Hockey team in the 2010 Olympics.

In similar stories about the delay of paid app support in Canada, Androinica.com heard a similar story told to the Gazette:

“There are many factors that come into play to make sure the selling and purchasing processes run smoothly,” said Wendy Rozeluk, a spokesperson for Google Canada. “It takes time to bring support to more countries, which is something we are working hard to do.”

Previous suggestions regarding paid apps never panned out, which is why I tacked on the rumor tag to this post. This is one case that a rumor actually comes from a respectable source with some proof, but still requires a slight degree of skepticism and crossing fingers.
