In the past week we learned about 911 calling issues with the Rogers branded HTC Dream and HTC Magic. But now in a little bit of good news the update that will offer a fix is being rolled out. And rolled out in an interesting way.
To begin with, the update is deemed as mandatory, and Rogers had to take a drastic measure to make sure everyone understood that. Basically, Rogers has disabled the internet access (as of 6am this morning) for anyone that has not applied the update.
According to the statement issued from Rogers;
“A mandatory software update is now available for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers to ensure 911 calls can be completed on these devices. These customers need to go immediately to http://www.rogers.com/dreamsoftwareupdate or http://www.rogers.com/magicsoftwareupdate on a PC to download the update. Users of Windows 7 or Macintosh will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions. Customers will need to backup any personal items before the update process.”
Of course, there is a little bit of good news with this mess. First, once this update is applied users will be able to re-enable their GPS and in addition all users will be given a free month of data fees. Finally in some news that may make Magic users happy — the update is also adding the new version of Sense UI which includes multitouch.

I have T-Mobile using my G1. 911 calls didn't go through on my phone too. Not even near Canada – I'm in Hawaii!
Rather than using Roger's update, google CursorSense 1.2.0 .
Got the "update" so I could use my data connection. Feels more like a downgrade than an upgrade. I was running a smooth cyanogen mod (~1.6), had to unroot, reinstall Rogers' original rom, update it with HTC Sync, call up Rogers to reactivate the data connection, reinstall apps (about half of which won't work with 1.5). Ugh. What a messy way to do business.
While on the phone with Rogers, I asked about the Dream->Magic free update that was all over the web these past weeks. Apparently they suspended the promotion, no one I spoke to could give me an answer to whether they'd honor it or not.
Been a Rogers' customer for more than 10 years, this is the worst experience I've ever had with them.

I feel the same way. Rogers hates their customers. 911 calls don't work? We turn off your data when we feel like it? We put promotions on, then suspend them?
What am I paying for, anyway?
