Verizon officially announces Droid phone for $199 after rebate

Motorola
Verizon. Droid. Android 2.0. November 6, 2009. $200. We’ve seen this thing talked about to death and now we can say that it’s all official: The Verizon Droid is coming to shake up the smartphone world one week from Friday.
At a special press event, Verizon unboxed the Christmas gift that we’ve already taken several peeks at over the past few weeks. The full QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.0 features, 3.7″ display with 480×854 pixels, 16GB SD card included, and a 5 megapixel camera, etc – it’s all there just as we suspected.
Furthermore, Verizon confirmed that a turn-by-turn Google navigation app is real and included on the phone. YES!
The Droid will be available beginning Friday November 6. The phone will cost $199.99 with a new two-year contract AFTER rebate. Now, the rebate is a little sketchy because you have to pay the $299.99 at the store and wait for the rebate to be shipped to you as a debit card that can be used anywhere. So far, that’s the only thing about the Droid I don’t like and I really wish all carriers and electronic companies would stop doing this crap. *Inhale* Let me stop before I spoil this news with a lengthy rant. Finish on a happy note!

I hate when US wireless carries modifies all the world phones (Quad Band) to dual band ones. HTC Hero did it (sprint), now droid is doing the same thing. I want to buy these phones, but I also want to use it when I travel in Europe (and iPhone is still Quad). Dual band is a no no. Sorry verizon and droid. This is a very good phone but you are still overcharging (i dont care about MIR) for a "possible" iPhone competitor. Nobody will pay more to get the same or slightly better features.
How bout this for a happy note: VZW seems to be slipping us something special… Cheaper monthly access! They say monthly plan will be $40/voice (450 mins) plus $30 for web / email (I assume sms is add'l) — that's $10 per month cheaper than any of their current plans. Check out verizonwireless.com — the cheapest they currently offer is $80/month! Yippee!
Ouch…450 min? I get unlimited minutes on T-Mo now for the same price.
Yes, but you have to pay full price for the phone.
I can't believe the Droid will not be quad band. Makes it worthless to me. I delayed getting an iphone for the droid. Now I find it's worthless to me.
Scott, I agree. My Sprint contract finally ended and I was looking forward to picking up a Droid. Quad band? The salesman at the local store (San Angelo) did not know what I was talking about and had no phones to demonstrate, power to display models was not working, etc. etc. What was Motorola thinking? What gives with Verizon? Slick ads for the size of their 3G network are meaningless if I can't use the phone the couple of months I'm in Europe and Asia each year. So, sadly, I think ATT&T is my only choice. Bill
