Those waiting for Android 1.6 will may have soon good news to wake up to this morning because the update process has begun. According to details being reported by TmoNews, the 1.6 update is being sent out to “select G1 handsets” as of last night at midnight and then after a 24-hour wait period that same update will begin to show up for myTouch 3G users.
Of course, while I am waiting anxiously like most everyone else, it is important to point out that this is a staggered rollout. Basically that means it may take a little while for everyone to actually see it. Nonetheless, this is another exciting day for Android geeks.
As of now, I have not seen any direct link for those looking to perform a manual update, but as you would expect, we will post an update when/if that becomes available. In the meantime, sit back and try and wait patiently.

Google unfortunately seem to have moved/hidden the directory where downloadable updates used to be found (https://android.clients.google.com/updates/).
I got it
Loving it! The new Market is pretty, the global search is slow, but still pretty awesome as well!
got my update this morning around 8.30am. none major updates but hey anything is good =]
Got it last Saturday night. So far, no problems. Just had to uninstall HTC_IME (software keyboard), somehow it did not work.

Juan, There is an updated version of HTC_IME available at the following link. You will need to uninstall the old version first. I used Astro to uninstall the old version and then install the new version and everything is working perfectly.

How do you get 5 screens!?
1.6 seems very nice on the G1, but I can't believe Google/HTC still haven't fixed the broken support for combo power/audio adapters. I can't use the G1 with 1.6 in my car at all for listening to MP3s.
Considering that Rogers (Canada) has let me down in the past, I am not holding my breath for an update any time soon. I called tech support (on Oct. 7th) and the person I talked to knew nothing of a 1.6 Android update. I asked to speak with someone more senior and was put on hold for more than 20 minutes…. I gave up.
Has anyone else contacted Rogers and if so, did you obtain any different news?
Has anyone that has downloaded Donut 1.6 version of the Android software found out about the power button function changing yet?.
My friend has updated his and the power (red) button no longer puts the phone to sleep, it now works like Nokia phones and cancels you out of whatever you are in, without having to use the arrow key several times, which was very annoying, it now waits 5 seconds then returns you back to the desktop home screen. So I don’t know how you put it asleep anymore?.
