Strategy Analytics report: Android to “grow 900 percent in 2009″

Nothing like a large number to catch your attention. According to a recent report from Strategy Analytics, shipments of Android based smartphones are going to grow 900 percent this year. Based on that it almost sounds like we are going to be seeing Android everywhere we turn, especially when they compare the growth of the iPhone at a “relatively lower 79 percent” in 2009.

While this next statement may not win me any Android friends, in fairness I do want to offer a comparison to put that 900 percent in perspective. We have to remember that Apple had a very good year in 2008 and sold many, many million iPhones. Given that, it is much easier to grow 900 percent from a relatively small number (Android) as opposed to increase an already large number (Apple).

That said, Android still deserves its time in the spotlight, which will hopefully help it grow even faster. I am sitting back waiting, and hoping for the day that I can see as many Android handsets out in the public as I do iPhones.
