Paid apps live in UK Android Market
March 12, 2009 | by Andrew Kameka
Android, Paid apps
Android users in the United Kingdom now have paid apps appearing on their Android phones. Confirming a report from T-Mobile UK’s Richard Warmsley, the Android Market in Her Majesty’s Kingdom is open for business today.
The wait is officially over now that paid apps are in the Market. Surprisingly, some prices were originally listed in US dollars and cents rather than the UK’s currency system. A few tipsters reported that they saw most apps with dollar signs rather than the British pound symbol (£), but the problem has been addressed for some. If you are still seeing paid apps listed in US currency, each $0.99 app displayed costs about £0.72. Hey, I just saved you from purchasing a converter app.
If you want to see only the newly picked crop of apps in the Android Market:
- Press “Applications” (or “Games”)
- Select “All Applications” (or any category)
- Press Menu > Change Views
- Select “Priced items only”
* This browsing filter worked on the U.S. version of the Android Market; I’m assuming/hoping the UK Market has it as well.
There you have it, British Android fans. Paid apps are finally at your fingertips. Which apps have caught your attention so far?

Not only do the app prices appear in US dollars for me, also refuses to accept a UK Maestro card (despite what the UK Android Market help pages say).
Had the same problem at first. You may have to go to Google Checkout on your PC first to configure your card, then it works seamlessly in the market place. It charges you in US bucks but means a $1.50 app is only about £1.
Having similar problems. It keep kicking back my Solo card even though Google Checkout supports it…
I would suggest everyone set up Google Checkout on the desktop first rather than the phone. It seems strange that Google isn’t taking its own supported services, though.
Yep tried setting my card up from my PC. Still saying “invalid credit card”…
On the google checkout site, it will only accept maestro/solo cards if the seller is uk based, otherwise only visa/mastercard is accepted as the US doesnt have maestro there
Yes, same problem here. Even if you set it up on the website, the phone still refuses, no matter what you do. I feel sorry for the software developers, who are missing out on hard earned revenue
