Opera Mini 4.2 now available for Android

Its always nice to have some options, especially when it comes to a mobile browser. Thankfully, Android now has just that, in addition to the default browser, G1 users can now download and install Opera Mini 4.2. The browser is available in the Market, and as expected is free of charge.

As for features, Opera Mini 4.2 has “speed dial” which gives you a nice starting point for commonly visited pages instead of having to always resort to your bookmarks. Of course, speaking of bookmarks, if you are running Opera 9.6 on your computer, then you will be able to sync your bookmarks between your G1 and your desktop.

Other features include skins, which will allow for some customization. And just in case you were looking for a really good reason to make the switch, Opera Mini 4.2 is fast, and that speed comes from the way the page loads. Instead of having the page download to your device first, with Opera Mini 4.2 the page is viewed from the Opera servers and then sent to your handset.

With just a short time to play so far, Opera Mini 4.2 seems to be a worthwhile alternative, it seems to be nice and fast. However it is not without a few little quirks, and seems like it will take a little getting used to. Of course, it is available for free, so go ahead and check it out.
